There’s no single answer to how much it costs to charge a Tesla here. Your home rate comes from PG&E plus a community choice aggregator. Or it comes from one of three city utilities. A Supercharger uses Tesla’s live site price. A mobile rescue is a separate job. The operator quotes you before any work starts, then bills you directly.
Two line items, not one company
Most Bay Area homes sit on PG&E’s wires. PG&E delivers the power to the meter. A community choice aggregator often supplies the generation. Those print as two charges on one bill.
In San Francisco, generation comes from CleanPowerSF. All of San Mateo County is Peninsula Clean Energy. That covers Daly City, Redwood City, Menlo Park, Pacifica, and Half Moon Bay. Silicon Valley Clean Energy covers Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Campbell, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, and Gilroy. San Jose runs San Jose Clean Energy. Ava Community Energy covers Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont, Hayward, Dublin, Pleasanton, and Livermore. MCE covers Richmond, Walnut Creek, Concord, Martinez, and San Ramon. Antioch and Brentwood stay on bundled PG&E generation.
Three cities skip the CCA model entirely. Santa Clara is Silicon Valley Power, with no CCA. Palo Alto is City of Palo Alto Utilities. Alameda is Alameda Municipal Power. In those three, the city sets the whole residential rate. Don’t call the outage line about a rate. The wires company isn’t always the generation provider.
How to price a Tesla charge from your bill
Cost is pack kilowatt-hours times your per-kWh rate, then losses. Tesla lists pack size in the car and on the sticker. A Long Range Model 3 or Y pack usually sits in the mid-70 kWh range. A Model S or X pack sits closer to 100 kWh. Heat and conversion typically eat about 10 to 15%.
Use this as a method, never as a quote. Take a Model 3 from 20% to full. That’s about 60 kWh into the pack. Then add roughly 12% for charging losses. You drew about 67 kWh from the wall. Multiply 67 by the cents-per-kWh on your latest bill. Peak and off-peak on the same plan won’t match. Use the rate that applied when you plugged in.
If you’re on PG&E wires, check pge.com for the current EV schedules. The named plans are Home Charging EV2-A, Electric Vehicle EV-B, and Electric Home E-ELEC. We aren’t printing a cents figure here. Those numbers move with each rate case.
What your city utility actually does
Peninsula Clean Energy, Silicon Valley Clean Energy, and San Jose Clean Energy each publish EV programs. Search EV Charge SF, Peninsula Clean Energy’s EV Incentives Program, and Ava Charge. MCE publishes Charge Up Contra Costa for multifamily and workplace Level 2. Confirm the live offer on the provider’s site.
Silicon Valley Power has no dedicated EV rate. A Santa Clara home charges on the standard residential rate. City of Palo Alto Utilities also has no dedicated residential EV schedule we could confirm. Alameda Municipal Power does offer an optional Electric Vehicle Time of Use rate. If you live in Palo Alto or Santa Clara, the city sets the rate.
Older buildings change the plug, not the tariff. In San Francisco, 77.2% of housing is pre-1980. Daly City sits at 78.7%, and Berkeley at 80.8%. Many of those units still share a 120-volt outlet. Read what a Level 1 charger actually is if that’s your wall. Then compare it with home 240-volt charging versus a roadside 240-volt rescue.
Home power, a Supercharger, and a truck are different bills
A home Level 2 session hits your utility bill. Tesla sets Supercharger prices by site, shown in the car. Public DC fast charging is built for speed. It’s usually the expensive way to buy a kWh next to overnight home charging. We aren’t publishing a Supercharger rate.
A mobile charge isn’t a utility kWh. Charge Pro SF is a referral line. We match you with an independent local operator. We don’t set the price. The operator quotes before starting and bills you directly. Operators typically add 10 to 20 miles in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival time. For the quote itself, see what a mobile EV charge quote covers.
Inland heat changes how many kWh you burn. San Francisco’s July normal high is 71.5F on the 1961-1990 record. Livermore’s July high is 89.7F, Antioch 90.4F, and Gilroy 88.3F. More air conditioning on I-580 or SR-4 means more energy before you’re home. See how long a Tesla charge takes on the coast versus inland for that split.
Other things that move the number
Filling a Model X draws more wall energy than a Model 3 top-off. Starting at 5% costs more kWh than starting at 40%.
Solar can offset a midday charge when panels are producing. Most owners still plug in overnight, when those panels are dark.
Recalculate when a new PG&E or CCA notice arrives. A winter figure is not a summer figure.
BART lists Level 2 charging at Warm Springs / South Fremont and at Lafayette. Confirm the live kWh price on bart.gov before you park. We could not verify EV charging on the OAK or SJC parking pages. SFO has a charging page, but we could not verify the stalls. A lot car that won’t wake after a trip isn’t a tariff issue. It’s a 12-volt or pack problem.
When you can’t plug in, the home rate doesn’t apply
A wall rate only matters if you can reach a plug. CVC 21718 lets you stop on a freeway when the car is disabled. CVC 22651(f) allows a tow after four hours on a full-access-control freeway. That applies if you can’t move under your own power. The Freeway Service Patrol, through 511, lists gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. Its public page doesn’t mention out-of-charge EV help.
For city-by-city charging context, start at our Bay Area EV charging hub. If you’re already stuck and need a mobile charge, call (415) 630-6268. We’ll connect you with a local operator. That operator quotes before any charging starts.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to fully charge a Tesla at home here?
It depends on pack size, losses, and the rate on your bill. Multiply wall kWh by your current cents-per-kWh. PG&E, your CCA, or a city utility sets that rate.
Is overnight charging cheaper for a Tesla here?
On PG&E EV time-of-use plans, off-peak hours are the cheap window. Confirm the exact hours on your own schedule. Silicon Valley Power and Palo Alto don’t publish a dedicated residential EV rate. Alameda Municipal Power does offer an EV time-of-use option.
Does a Supercharger cost more than charging at home?
Tesla prices Superchargers for speed, site by site. Home Level 2 on an off-peak utility rate is usually the cheaper kWh. A mobile rescue is a labor quote, not a utility kWh.
