The stall on El Camino in Redwood City looks live enough. Your Chevy Equinox EV won’t charge anyway. The handle clicked in, and the session never opened.

That’s the Peninsula handshake stall, not a dead pack. Unstick the session before you treat the traction battery as empty.

GM built the Equinox EV on Ultium, the same stack as the Blazer EV. The cluster, the port LED, and the myChevrolet app all have to agree before current flows. When they don’t, you sit in a San Mateo or Palo Alto lot with range still on the gauge.

Read the cluster and the port first

Read what the car is showing you before you book a dealer bay.

Unable to Charge on the cluster usually means Ultium declined the session. It doesn’t name the stall or a failed part. A charge-port LED that blinks amber, instead of going solid green, is the same refusal. The myChevrolet app saying charging not started, with the handle seated, is that refusal again.

Sometimes the session starts, then dies almost at once. That’s often a pilot-signal mismatch with that cabinet. Try the next open stall in the same row. Then try a different cabinet in the same lot. You’re testing the handshake in front of you. This page doesn’t map a nearest working post, because that distance wasn’t verified here.

If the Equinox EV won’t wake at all, stop swapping cables. Work the Chevy Equinox EV 12V checks before you keep plugging in.

Peninsula lots make the handshake fail first

Public posts along US-101 and El Camino Real see a lot of short stops. San Mateo, Burlingame, San Carlos, and Redwood City all sit on that strip. Palo Alto campus lots add another pattern: you walk back after a meeting, and nothing starts.

Peninsula Clean Energy supplies generation across San Mateo County, from Daly City through Menlo Park and East Palo Alto. PG&E still owns the wires. Palo Alto is a different shop. City of Palo Alto Utilities runs electric service there. None of that repairs a failed handshake in a lot. Confirm any home rate with that utility before you change a plan. Don’t read a stall fault as a bill problem.

Census ACS 2019-2023 still shows a lot of older Peninsula housing. Pre-1980 stock is 78.7 percent in Daly City and 81.9 percent in San Bruno. Those buildings often mean a shared 120-volt outlet overnight, not a dedicated wall unit. The Equinox EV can look like it started. Ultium can also drop the session after a quiet software hiccup. You wake up low in the same parking space. Run the reset below before you blame the outlet.

Inspect the port before you blame software

The Equinox EV uses a motor-driven charge door. A weak 12-volt battery is a common reason that door won’t open. It’s also a common reason the latch won’t release after a failed try.

Take a flashlight to the inlet. Leaves, grit, and a bent pin will stop a latch even when Ultium is healthy. Blow the debris out, and don’t jam the handle to force a click. If the connector won’t latch, the car may refuse the session on purpose.

If the handle is stuck after a failed try, stop pulling on it. Work the charge port release steps next. A yanked cable can turn a software lock into a hardware mess.

A connected post that never starts current is a known public-stall pattern. The connected but not charging checklist walks that case without treating your Equinox EV as a one-off.

Reset the Ultium session on the car

Do this before you call anyone. It doesn’t need a shop bay.

  1. Unplug the cable all the way from the inlet.
  2. Lock the Equinox EV with the key fob, not the door switch.
  3. Walk away for five minutes so the body module can power down.
  4. Unlock, open the driver’s door, and sit without pressing the brake.
  5. Wait until every cluster display has come up on its own.
  6. Get out, lock again with the fob, and wait two minutes.
  7. Plug into a different post if one is open in the same lot.

You’re clearing a stuck handshake, not repairing a pack. If the amber LED returns on the new post, software or the 12-volt battery is still in play. If the new post works, the first stall failed the negotiation. Move on instead of arguing with a dead cabinet.

If myChevrolet offers a charging-related update, install it when you have a stable connection. A dealer can sync the car if you’re several builds behind. This page couldn’t confirm GM’s current charging-update calendar from a primary bulletin. Ask the dealer which charging fix is on your VIN.

The Blazer EV uses the same Ultium charging stack. A reset that clears an Equinox EV session is the reset to try on a Blazer EV too. Start with the Blazer EV no-start checks if that car won’t even wake.

Heat is milder on the coast, harder inland of the hills

The Peninsula isn’t one climate. Pacifica and Half Moon Bay sit on the Coastside, while Redwood City and Palo Alto sit inland of those hills. NWS cooperative-station 1961-1990 normals, via WRCC, put San Francisco’s July average max at 71.5°F. San Jose sits near 82°F, and Livermore’s July average max is 89.7°F. The inland heat gap over the coast is large, and it’s documented.

An Equinox EV that sat in an unshaded San Mateo or Foster City lot can trip an inlet-temperature check. Unplug and let the inlet cool in shade, then retry once. Don’t keep hammering a hot port.

Coastal fog in Pacifica and along SR-1 toward Half Moon Bay does the opposite. You get cooler air and damp fittings. Wipe the inlet if you see moisture, then seat the handle again. Water in the port is a reason to pause, not a reason to force a session.

The 12-volt battery can block charging with range still showing

The traction pack can show plenty of miles. The Equinox EV still won’t charge if the 12-volt battery is dead. The 12-volt system runs the modules that unlock the port door, talk to the post, and close the high-voltage contactors. No 12-volt power means no session, even with a healthy pack.

The 12-volt battery sits under the hood on the driver’s side. Jump points are labeled once the hood is up. Dim interior lights, a short fob range, and a car that sat for weeks are the usual tells. A long stay near SFO, then a dead morning in San Bruno or Millbrae, fits that pattern. SFO’s electric-vehicle charging page exists, but it couldn’t be read on this pass. Confirm posted stalls in the garage yourself. The 12-volt drain after a parked trip doesn’t depend on those stalls.

If the cluster is dark, stop swapping public posts and jump the 12-volt battery first. For the cascade through the car, read what happens when an EV 12V dies.

This page couldn’t confirm a factory replacement interval for the Equinox EV 12-volt battery from GM’s public owner copy. If the battery is still original and years old, treat a no-charge, no-door car as a 12-volt suspect. A shop can load-test it. An operator in the network can jump it at the bumper.

If you already stopped on US-101

US-101 through San Mateo County is a bad place to debug software. California Vehicle Code 21718 bars stopping on a freeway except in limited cases. A disabled vehicle that can’t keep moving, with help already summoned, is one of those cases. CVC 22651(f) lets a vehicle be removed after more than four hours on a full-access-control freeway if it can’t move under its own power.

The Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol is a weekday peak program run by MTC, CHP, and Caltrans with contracted trucks. Hours listed on 511.org are Monday to Friday, 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM. Dial 511 and say Freeway Assist, or use a call box. The MTC FSP page lists gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. It doesn’t mention electric vehicles or out-of-charge help. That page was read 2026-09-18. Don’t wait on FSP for a failed Equinox EV charge session.

Outside those hours, the CHP Rotation Tow Program assigns the truck, and you don’t pick the company. Westbound San Mateo-Hayward and Dumbarton traffic is the tolled direction on those spans. BATA and MTC set the bridge tolls, and cash ended in March 2020. This page couldn’t verify a published disabled-vehicle-on-a-bridge policy. If you stall on an approach, stay out of live lanes and summon help.

When a mobile charge beats a dealer tow

A dealer software sync can still be the real fix. You have to reach the bay first. If the car won’t take a public session, and the 12-volt battery is weak, a local operator can work at the bumper.

Charge Pro SF is a referral line. It matches stranded EV drivers with independent mobile rescue operators across the Bay Area. It doesn’t hold a trade license. It owns no trucks. It employs no technicians. It sets no prices, and it publishes no arrival window. The operator quotes you before any work starts and bills you directly.

The pros in that network bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. For a Chevy they use a CCS or J1772 adapter. They typically add 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charge time on the cable, never an arrival window. They can also jump or replace a dead 12-volt battery on site.

Distance, time of day, and the range you need all move the quote. Ask for that number before they plug in.

Non-Tesla EV rescue is the right service page for an Equinox EV. If you’re still in Redwood City, the Redwood City roadside page covers the El Camino strip.

Don’t expect the operator to perform GM warranty work. A charging update still belongs at a Chevy dealer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Chevy Equinox EV say unable to charge?

Ultium declined the session. A stale software build, a bad handshake with that post, or a weak 12-volt battery are the usual causes. Reset the car, then try a different stall. If both fail, you need an update or a 12-volt test.

Can a dead 12-volt battery stop an Equinox EV from charging?

Yes. The 12-volt system powers the door motor, the control modules, and the contactors. A full traction pack can’t open a charge session without them. Jump the labeled under-hood points, then retry the post.

Is the Blazer EV the same car for charging faults?

It runs the same Ultium charging stack and the same inlet logic. Use the same reset. Use the same 12-volt checks. A stall that refuses an Equinox EV can refuse a Blazer EV too.

If the Equinox EV still won’t charge after the reset, the port check, and a 12-volt jump, call Charge Pro SF at (415) 630-6268. Describe the cluster text and the port LED. The operator quotes before starting. You stay on the Peninsula lot instead of waiting on a dealer hook.
