You left the house on backup power and flew out of SFO. The wall pack kept the fridge cold in 94404. The Tesla in the airport lot still wouldn’t wake when you got back. Battery backup in this San Mateo County lagoon city means house storage. It doesn’t mean a charge for a car that sat at the airport.

House power and a parked EV are not the same job

People here look up battery backup after a PG&E outage. Others look it up when they add solar. Peninsula Clean Energy supplies the generation for San Mateo County. PG&E still runs the distribution wires. A home battery lives on that panel. It stores energy for lights, the fridge, and a medical device. It doesn’t travel with you. It can’t follow US-101 to an airport garage. It can’t meet a car that already sat for a week.

Census files put this incorporated city at 3.787 square miles. The ACS 2019-2023 population is 32,964. The 2024 estimate is 32,657. About 66.1 percent of housing was built before 1980. Older panels are common in that stock. That’s a real reason to shop for house storage. It’s not a reason to expect the same pack to rescue an EV.

The climate here is mild and breezy on filled marsh. Air-conditioning load stays low compared with inland valleys. Livermore’s July normal high sits at 89.7F on the 1961-1990 record. The SFO-area July normal high is 71.5F. House batteries here are for outages and solar shifting. They’re not a hedge against heavy cooling load.

What a wall pack can run, and what it never reaches

A Tesla Powerwall, an Enphase bank, or a similar pack is fixed electrical work. It ties into the main panel through a gateway. In an outage it can hold selected circuits. Whether it also feeds a garage wall connector depends on the design. We couldn’t confirm a city rule that requires that tie-in. Ask the electrician who sizes the panel. Then check the license at cslb.ca.gov.

Charge Pro SF doesn’t install home batteries. We hold no license for that trade. We own no warehouse and no parts inventory. We own no trucks. We employ no technicians. We match stranded EV drivers with independent local operators. The operator quotes you before any work starts. They bill you directly.

If the house on Hillsdale Boulevard goes dark, call the installer or PG&E. Same story on East Third Avenue. If the EV won’t roll, that’s a different call. A wall pack in Marina Point or Bay Vista can’t jump a silent 12-volt. It can’t push range into a Tesla already sitting at SFO.

The airport lot doesn’t care that your house stayed up

Drivers in 94404 leave cars at SFO for work trips and vacations. The house can stay up the whole time. The car still ages in a garage or lot. After days of sitting, the 12-volt may drop too low to wake the car. Teslas and most other EVs need that 12-volt to boot. A dead 12-volt looks like a brick. The traction pack may still hold energy. The traction pack can also be empty. You won’t know which failure you have from the lagoon driveway.

SFO publishes an electric-vehicle charging page. Automated fetches of flysfo.com couldn’t read stall counts, hours, or rules. Confirm those details yourself at flysfo.com/parking/electric-vehicle-charging before you park. We’re not going to invent them. The airport site also skips the dead-car case. It doesn’t tell you what to do if the car is silent on return. That’s the gap this page answers.

If the car is silent when you get back, house storage won’t help. A mobile Level 2 session or a 12-volt jump might. Read mobile EV charging or a home battery for that split. For the long-park 12-volt pattern, see Tesla 12V failure after a long park.

SR-92, the fill, and a car that stops on the bridge

This city sits at the west foot of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. SR-92 is the spine off US-101. The lagoon neighborhoods work like a single loop in and out. A low car on that loop is already in a tight spot. A low car on the span is a worse problem. Tolls there are westbound only and all-electronic. We found no published disabled-EV policy for that crossing. Treat that gap as unconfirmed. You still have to follow the Vehicle Code if you stop.

California Vehicle Code 21718 bars freeway stopping except in narrow cases. One case is a vehicle so disabled that stopping is unavoidable. Another vehicle must already have been summoned to assist. CVC 22651(f) allows removal after four hours on a full-access-control freeway. That applies when you can’t move the car under its own power. A Powerwall on the lagoon doesn’t qualify as help on the span.

The Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol is an MTC, CHP, and Caltrans partnership. On weekdays it runs 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. Dial 511 and ask for Freeway Assist. The MTC page lists a free gallon of gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. It doesn’t mention electric vehicles or an empty traction pack. We read that page on 2026-09-18. Outside those hours, CHP rotation tows handle disabled cars. A rotation tow isn’t a mobile charge.

Leo J. Ryan Park, the Visa campus, and Gilead explain the weekday traffic. None of them put electrons into a Tesla on SR-92. Hayward sits across the water. Redwood Shores and Belmont sit next door. The geography is tight. The house battery still stays on its pad.

Don’t spend the last bar trying to reach the driveway

Some drivers treat the wall connector as backup for the car. That only works if the car can still get home. On filled marsh with one loop, a missed turn is a long way around. SR-92 to the toll plaza isn’t a driveway. If the gauge is already in the warning band, stay put and call. Betting on the house from the bridge approach is how people stall mid-span.

Rescue on the curb, not a panel upgrade

The operators we connect you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. Tesla owners get a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. A typical session adds about 10 to 20 miles of range. Charging time is usually 15 to 30 minutes. That clock is plug time. It isn’t a promise of when someone arrives. We don’t publish arrival windows. We don’t publish business hours.

If the 12-volt is the failure, they can jump it or replace it on site. That covers Tesla and every major EV brand. The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. Charge Pro SF isn’t the licensee on the truck.

Weigh a wall connector against a truck in home 240-volt charging versus a roadside 240-volt rescue. For an empty pack, start with mobile EV charging. For a silent 12-volt, use Tesla 12V battery jump.

We won’t print a price. Distance, time of day, and how much range you need all move the quote. The operator gives you the number before work begins. A tow is a different vendor and a different bill.

Nearby peninsula streets, and when to call

San Mateo sits west of the lagoons. EV charging in San Mateo covers that neighbor. San Bruno sits on the airport side of 101. EV roadside help in San Bruno is the long-stay version of the same SFO problem. Drivers use the same corridors from either city: US-101, SR-92, and the bridge approach.

Call Charge Pro SF when the house is fine and the car isn’t. Empty pack. Dead 12-volt. A Tesla that sat through a flight. A car stuck on East Third Avenue after a campus day at Visa or Gilead. We connect you with a local operator at (415) 630-6268. They quote before they start. They do the work. We don’t.
