People who type “battery backup Gilroy” are usually thinking about the house. A wall unit in Eagle Ridge can keep lights on through a PG&E outage. It can’t follow an EV that’s already empty. Gilroy heat still strands a car a house battery can’t reach.
House storage stays on the house
Gilroy is an incorporated city in Santa Clara County and covers 16.536 square miles. The ACS 2019-2023 population is 58,561. The 2024 Census estimate is 60,390. ZIP 95020 is the code most callers use. PG&E runs the distribution wires. Silicon Valley Clean Energy is the CCA that supplies generation.
A home battery is a residential storage unit. Tesla Powerwall and similar wall packs sit in a garage or on an exterior wall. They feed the house panel, not a car on US-101. Solar and electrical contractors handle those installs. Charge Pro SF doesn’t hang those packs. We’re a referral line for stranded EVs. We don’t hang batteries, own a yard, or employ technicians.
For the wall-pack versus truck split, start with mobile EV charging or a home battery.
Gilroy heat, and a pack that still dies
South Bay heat isn’t even. Gilroy sits inland at the hot end of the valley. The 1961-1990 NWS cooperative-station normal high for July is 88.3F. San Jose is about 82F on that same vintage. Cabin AC and a climb both pull range. A house battery can still read full while the car is already in trouble.
You can leave storage running in Sunrise and still stall the car. The wall unit never leaves the lot. Day-trip traffic comes off US-101 for the Gilroy Premium Outlets. Downtown Gilroy and Christmas Hill Park sit on the same south-county map. Garlic Festival heritage is a local landmark, not power for a stranded EV. Glen Loma and Las Animas sit off that same spine.
East, SR-152 is the Pacheco Pass approach toward I-5. West, SR-152 is Hecker Pass toward the coast. Monterey Road and Leavesley Road tie those corridors together. Morgan Hill is the next city north. None of that pavement is wired to your garage.
A house battery can’t reach those places. Use EV roadside help in Gilroy for that case.
About 36.0% of Gilroy housing was built before 1980, per ACS 2019-2023. Older stock is a reason people shop home storage and panel work. It isn’t a reason a rescue truck shows up. Panel upgrades and storage are contractor jobs. An empty EV is a different call.
What a mobile charge actually is
When the traction pack is empty, the car needs energy at the bumper. The operators we connect you with bring a 240V Level 2 source. Tesla uses a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. A typical session adds about 10 to 20 miles of range. That takes 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time. It isn’t an arrival time. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly.
That’s mobile EV charging, not a home install. Home versus shoulder 240-volt is covered in home 240-volt charging versus a roadside 240-volt rescue.
A dead 12V is a third case. The small battery wakes computers, locks, and contactors. A charged pack can still sit dark if the 12V is flat. Operators in this network can jump or replace that 12V on site. They cover Tesla and every major EV brand. More on that path is at Tesla 12V jump help.
If you’re already stopped on US-101
California Vehicle Code 21718 bans stopping on a freeway except in limited cases. A disabled vehicle that can’t keep going is one of those cases. Another vehicle has to be summoned to assist. CVC 22651(f) allows removal after more than four hours. That applies on a full-access-control freeway. You have to be unable to move under your own power. Those rules are from leginfo, read 2026-09-18.
The Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol is MTC, CHP, and Caltrans together. Hours are Monday to Friday, 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM. That’s from 511.org. Dial 511 and say “Freeway Assist,” or use a call box. The MTC FSP page on 2026-09-18 lists gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. It doesn’t mention electric vehicles or out-of-charge help. Outside those hours, the CHP Rotation Tow Program assigns a vendor. You don’t pick the company.
We didn’t find a published out-of-charge policy for FSP. Treat 511 as traffic and classic roadside, not as an EV pack fill. Caltrans District 4 covers the nine Bay Area counties for highway conditions. 511 SF Bay is the regional traveler line.
Utility programs don’t move a stranded car
Silicon Valley Clean Energy lists an Electric Vehicle Rebate. PG&E publishes residential EV rate names. Those names are Home Charging EV2-A, Electric Vehicle EV-B, and Electric Home E-ELEC. Confirm current terms on svcleanenergy.org and pge.com before you apply. No dollar figure for those programs is stated here. This page isn’t a rate sheet. Charge Pro SF doesn’t set utility prices and doesn’t advise on your bill.
Those programs are for homes and vehicles you can still drive. They don’t dispatch a truck to the Gilroy Premium Outlets lot. They don’t meet you on the Pacheco Pass climb.
The Gilroy EV charging page covers this city. For a stall in the next town, use EV roadside help in Morgan Hill.
What Charge Pro SF is, and isn’t
Charge Pro SF matches stranded EV drivers with independent local operators. We don’t perform the work. We don’t own trucks or equipment. We don’t employ technicians. We publish no hours and promise no arrival. The brand isn’t the installer for house batteries in Gilroy.
If your search was for home storage, call solar and electrical contractors. Look in Santa Clara County. If the car is the empty one, we can connect you. The operator brings Level 2 to the bumper, quotes first, and bills you.
Stay with the vehicle when it’s safe. Keep hazard lights on. Don’t count on a neighbor’s house battery. That holds even a block away in downtown Gilroy. That unit is tied to a panel, not to your charge port.
Call (415) 630-6268 when you want a local operator matched to the car. That’s the number for the referral. It isn’t a claim that a truck is already rolling.
