A weeknight pack in Union City can look fine at the BART lot. Then it falls apart on the I-880 merge. That’s the usual search behind ev roadside assistance union city. The car won’t make the next plug, or it won’t wake.

A technician kneels beside a stopped electric car on a road shoulder, connecting a cable from a mobile charging truck parked behind it.

What that search is asking for

Charge Pro SF is a referral line for the Bay Area. It matches you with an independent local operator. The brand doesn’t own trucks, and it doesn’t do the work. The operator quotes you before anything starts, then bills you directly.

EV roadside assistance in Union City means help at the car. It isn’t a shop visit or a patrol truck with EV gear. You stay with the vehicle while a pro brings power or a 12V jump.

Union City is an incorporated city in Alameda County. Land area is 19.398 square miles in the 2023 Gazetteer. Census ACS 2019-2023 counts 68,141 residents, with a 2024 estimate of 66,196. Hayward sits north, Fremont sits south, and Newark sits toward the bay.

PG&E distributes the electricity, and Ava Community Energy is the CCA for generation. That isn’t the City of Alameda setup, which uses Alameda Municipal Power. If you’re reporting an outage, you still call PG&E. This page won’t tell you how to read your bill.

The weeknight pattern starts in Decoto, Alvarado, New Haven, or the Gateway district. The dash still showed a commute when you pulled out. I-880 or SR-84 can spend more range than you planned. So can the rise toward Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park. Now the car is stuck, and you need a person with a rig.

I-880, the hills, and SR-84 to the Dumbarton

I-880 is the north-south spine through town. It’s also where a thin pack becomes a shoulder problem. If you’re already on the freeway, stay in the car when that’s safer. California Vehicle Code 21718 bans stopping on a freeway except in limited cases. A disabled car that can’t keep moving, with help already summoned, is one exception.

Don’t sit there for hours hoping the gauge recovers. CVC 22651(f) allows removal after more than four hours on a full-access-control freeway. That applies when you can’t move the car under its own power.

On weekdays, the Freeway Service Patrol works freeway beats. 511.org lists weekday hours as 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM. Dial 511 and say “Freeway Assist,” or use a call box. MTC, CHP, and Caltrans run it through contracted tow companies. The MTC FSP page lists gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. It doesn’t mention electric vehicles or an out-of-charge fill.

Outside those hours, CHP’s Rotation Tow Program assigns the vendor. You don’t pick the company on that rotation. Caltrans District 4 posts highway conditions on QuickMap. None of that is a mobile Level 2 charge to the pack.

SR-84 in Union City is Decoto Road until it becomes the Dumbarton approach. The Dumbarton Bridge tolls westbound only, and cash ended in March 2020. FasTrak, a license-plate account, or an invoice is how BATA collects. Menlo Park sits across that span, so check remaining range before you commit. A stall on the approach is worse than a surface lot in town.

Mission Boulevard and Alvarado-Niles Road are the local grid. East of Mission, the land rises toward Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park. That hill run looks short on a map. It still spends range you thought you had for the 880 merge.

Apartments, older housing, and the BART park-and-ride

The Union City BART intermodal station is a named stranding pin for this city. People park, ride, and come back to a car that sat for hours. A long sit is hard on the 12V. It can also leave you with less pack than you remembered.

BART publishes Level 2 charging at Warm Springs / South Fremont with 42 plugs. Lafayette’s BART lot lists 4 Level 2 plugs on the same bart.gov page. Union City BART wasn’t on that list as of 2026-09-18. Confirm the station’s current stalls on bart.gov before you plan around them. This page won’t invent a stall count.

If the car won’t wake after that long park, start with the 12V. The traction pack can still hold energy while the 12V is dead.

ACS 2019-2023 finds 52.6 percent of Union City housing was built before 1980. Decoto and Alvarado hold a lot of that older stock. New Haven and the Gateway district sit in the same city with newer buildings. A 240-volt circuit at home is a property question. A licensed electrician answers it, and a roadside page can’t.

Shared lots and older buildings make overnight charging a building-by-building fact. Confirm with your manager or your own outlet. Don’t treat this city as a public charging story this page can’t verify. Newer housing here also points more help at the road and the 12V.

ZIP 94587 is the ZIP Census files tie most cleanly to Union City. 94542, 94544, 94545, 94552, and 94555 also overlap the place boundary. Those ZIPs run into Hayward and Fremont too. Give the street, not just the ZIP, so dispatch isn’t looking in the wrong city.

Empty pack versus a 12V that won’t wake

Two failures share the same search, and they aren’t the same job. An empty traction pack is a range problem. The car may still show a screen. It won’t add miles until it takes energy. Out-of-charge recovery is a 240-volt Level 2 source brought to the car. Operators typically add 10 to 20 miles in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That window is charging time on site, not travel time to you. It can be enough to reach a charger you already picked in your app. That’s only true if the site sits inside the miles they add. It isn’t a full overnight fill.

A dead 12V is a wake problem. Dark screen, odd locks, and no ready light are the usual tells. The main pack can be fine. Tesla 12V battery jump work happens at the car. If the battery won’t hold after a jump, the operator can quote a replacement there. That quote is theirs, not Charge Pro SF’s.

Tesla, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and Chevy all show up in this mix. The rig carries a native NACS plug plus CCS or J1772 adapters. Tell dispatch the model before anyone rolls, because the wrong inlet wastes the visit.

If the car dies again a block later, stop repeating the same 12V jump. Get a replacement quote, or a charge if the pack is also low. Don’t keep rolling on a 12V that’s already failed twice.

What the operator brings to the pin

The rig isn’t a tow truck or a gas-station jump pack. It’s a mobile 240-volt source and the 12V tools for a car that won’t boot. Charge Pro SF doesn’t stock that equipment, and independent operators do. The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. They handle Tesla and every major EV brand. You get a quote first, then you pay them.

A charge won’t fix a tire, a stuck port, or a drivetrain code. Say what the car is doing. A mobile charge is for an empty pack. A 12V jump is for a car that won’t wake. A tow is for a car that can’t take energy or can’t roll.

Apartment driveways and legal surface lots are easier meet points than a live 880 lane. If you can still reach a legal space on Alvarado-Niles, do that while it moves. If you can’t, stay put and describe the shoulder.

Charge in place, or a tow

Drivers ask which call is smarter. California doesn’t cap ordinary private or consensual tow rates statewide. Operators set those rates, subject to local ordinance. CVC 22658 requires a posted 17 by 22 inch sign with one-inch lettering. It must name the enforcement number and each tow company. It must also say removal is at the owner’s expense. The operator must notify law enforcement within one hour and give written notice. Overcharging past the approved rate there creates liability for four times the amount charged.

None of that is a Charge Pro SF fee table. We don’t publish prices because we don’t set them. Ask the mobile operator for a quote, then ask a tow company for a quote. Compare those two numbers for your exact pin.

In Alvarado or New Haven, staying put for a charge is often simpler. On I-880, the four-hour removal clock and the FSP beat matter more than convenience. If CHP is already rotating a tow, say so when you call. The operator needs to know whether the car will still be there.

No Union City-specific EV rescue ordinance turned up in the sources used for this page. If a lot attendant threatens a hook, photograph the posted sign and company name.

Fremont, Newark, Hayward, and the bridge

Union City is a seam between Fremont, Newark, and Hayward. Fremont is south, Newark sits toward the bay, and Hayward is north along 880. Menlo Park sits across the Dumbarton from this side of SR-84.

If you rolled south and the car quit toward Fremont, use the Fremont roadside guide. Newark’s 880 edge has its own writeup in EV roadside help in Newark. Empty on 880 toward Hayward is covered in the Hayward I-880 guide.

Warm Springs / South Fremont BART is a verified Level 2 site with 42 plugs. That isn’t a promise you can reach it from where you sit. Check the app and the remaining miles. Don’t treat a named site as a guaranteed save.

How to place the call

You need a location a driver can find. Give Union City BART, a Mission Boulevard block, or a Decoto Road pin near SR-84. A stall in New Haven works too. Say the make, whether the screen is on, and whether you’re on I-880.

The city page is EV charging in Union City. Charge Pro SF serves every city in the county. The work still belongs to the operator who accepts the job.

Call (415) 630-6268 when you want the referral line to match you. You’ll hear a recording notice, as Penal Code 632 requires all-party consent. The operator quotes before they start. This page doesn’t publish an arrival clock, and it won’t invent one.

Frequently asked questions

If my Tesla won’t start at the Union City BART lot, is the pack empty?

Usually it’s the 12V if the car sat for hours and the screen is dark. An empty pack still tends to show a low-range warning before it quits. A 12V jump is the first on-site step. If the car then reports zero usable range, you need energy, not another jump.

Do operators help non-Tesla EVs in Union City?

The pros we send bring a native NACS plug plus CCS or J1772 adapters. Give the model so they bring the right inlet.

What should I do if I’m already stopped on I-880?

Stay with the car if that’s the safe choice. Summon help so you fit the CVC 21718 disabled exception. Try 511 for Freeway Assist during published FSP hours. If you need a mobile charge, say you’re on the 880 shoulder. Don’t wait out the four-hour removal window hoping the pack recovers.
