Your pack is already low when you hit Hayward’s 880 and 92 tangle. The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge feeds you into I-880 over the estuary. The car often has no spare miles. EV roadside assistance in Hayward is the call for that stall. Charge Pro SF matches you with independent local operators. They bring a 240-volt Level 2 charge or a 12V jump to the car.

Hayward’s tangle isn’t a generic East Bay merge

Hayward is an incorporated city in Alameda County. The 2023 Gazetteer lists 45.8 square miles of land. ACS 2019-2023 puts the population at 159,201. The 2024 Census estimate is 158,440. That’s a large, mixed East Bay city, not a one-exit suburb.

I-880 is the north-south spine. It runs toward San Leandro one way, and toward Union City and Fremont the other. SR-92 is the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge. I-580 peels toward Castro Valley. SR-238 is Mission Boulevard and the Foothill corridor. Jackson Street works the surface grid. The local stranding angle is the east foot of that bridge. A low pack over the water can’t recoup energy on the span.

SR-92 at the estuary

The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge is one of the seven state-owned spans. Caltrans owns the structure, and BATA and MTC set the tolls. Cash ended for good in March 2020. Open Road Tolling is all-electronic now. FasTrak, a license-plate account, or an invoice are the paths. The tolled direction is westbound only, Hayward toward San Mateo. Eastbound into Hayward doesn’t pay at a plaza. The Hayward-San Mateo Bridge toll plaza is the westbound landmark on this side.

No primary page we read posted a disabled-vehicle rule for the bridge deck. That check was September 18, 2026. Confirm the current rule with Caltrans District 4 or 511 SF Bay. Don’t assume a shoulder on the span is a legal wait.

I-880 through the city

I-880 carries the through traffic that never meant to stop in Hayward. Alameda CTC runs express lanes on this freeway. FasTrak is required for those lanes. Hours are generally 5 AM to 8 PM on weekdays. This page won’t tell you to pull left. Median or left-shoulder placement wasn’t verified on a primary source. If the pack is dying in an express lane, follow CHP.

SR-238, I-580, and the hill weather

SR-238 toward Fremont is a foothill corridor. I-580 toward Castro Valley climbs off the bay plain. Cal State East Bay and Garin Regional Park sit in that hill band. Near the water, Hayward stays milder. The Hayward Highlands run warmer. Locals still talk about the Hayward hole, the fog gap off the bay. AC load is moderate next to the inland valleys. That isn’t a mile-by-mile range table. A Mount Eden loop and a highlands commute don’t spend the pack alike.

Shoulder law, FSP, and the four-hour clock

CVC 21718 bars stopping on a freeway except in tight cases. A vehicle so disabled that stopping is unavoidable is one exception. You also need to have summoned another vehicle to assist. Turn the hazards on and keep people out of live lanes.

CVC 22651(f) allows removal after four hours on a full-access-control freeway. That applies when the driver can’t move the car under its own power. The clock is a towing risk, not a waiting room.

The Freeway Service Patrol is MTC, CHP, and Caltrans together. Private tow firms run the beats under bid. Published hours are Monday to Friday, per 511.org. That’s 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM. Dial 511 and say “Freeway Assist,” or use a call box. MTC says the patrol handles more than 100,000 incidents a year. The published list is a free gallon of gas, jump-starts, and radiator refills. It also covers crash and debris clears. The FSP page doesn’t mention electric vehicles. It doesn’t mention out-of-charge recovery. That reading is from September 18, 2026. Don’t treat an FSP truck as a traction-pack refill. After hours, the CHP Rotation Tow Program assigns the wrecker. You don’t pick the company.

If you want the regional order of operations, use the freeway empty-pack steps. The Hayward 880 companion is out of charge on I-880 in Hayward.

Downtown renters, campus lots, and the bridge foot

Hayward isn’t one housing pattern. About 64.1% of housing was built before 1980, per ACS 2019-2023. This page can’t confirm which building has a 240-volt circuit. If you rent downtown or in the Jackson Triangle, check the panel. Overnight charging isn’t a fact we can verify door by door.

Hayward also has a large mixed-income renter population. Stack that with the east foot of SR-92. You get a Hayward stall, not a copied Peninsula one. People leave home without a guaranteed wall plug. Then they meet the bridge merge with a thin buffer.

Downtown Hayward, the Hayward Highlands, and Fairway Park sit in this mix. Mount Eden and the Jackson Triangle do too. Cherryland sits next door, outside the city line. Cal State East Bay is a hill campus with long sits in the lot. The toll plaza is the westbound gate to San Mateo. Hayward’s city hub keeps the local service links in one place.

PG&E delivers the power on the poles. Ava Community Energy is the CCA for Hayward. Ava publishes the Alameda County Incentive Project and Ava Charge. Outage reports still go to PG&E. This page won’t interpret your rate, including EV2-A, EV-B, or E-ELEC.

San Leandro is the next 880 city north. Union City, Newark, and Fremont sit south. Castro Valley sits up I-580. San Mateo sits across the water, and we serve those cities. The operator who takes your pin still quotes in front of you.

A charging cable plugged into an EV beside a roadside service van

The pack is empty, or the 12V is

A silent EV is two different failures. One car rolled until the traction pack was done. The other won’t wake because the small 12-volt battery died.

An empty pack wants energy at the charge port. Mobile EV charging is that job. Operators we connect you with bring a 240V Level 2 source. Tesla takes a native NACS plug. Other brands use a CCS or J1772 adapter. They typically add 10 to 20 miles of range. Plug time is typically 15 to 30 minutes. That window is charging time. It isn’t an arrival time. Charge Pro SF doesn’t publish arrival windows.

A dead 12V is quieter and meaner. Screens, locks, and the charge-port door can all fail. The traction pack can still hold energy you can’t reach. Tesla, Ford, Rivian, Hyundai, GM, and the other majors all carry that 12V. A 12V jump on a Tesla is often the first move. Some operators can replace the unit on site. Ask before they start. Don’t let a random gas-car pack get clamped on.

Tesla’s own roadside channel is a different network. Confirm what they’ll send in the Tesla app or on Tesla’s site. This page won’t invent their menu, and Charge Pro SF isn’t Tesla.

Who comes, and who sends the bill

We’re a referral line, not the crew on the truck. We don’t hold the trade license for the work. We don’t own trucks, a yard, or chargers. We don’t employ the technician. The independent operator quotes you before anything starts, then bills you directly.

They typically bring:

  • A 240V Level 2 source on the truck
  • NACS for Tesla
  • CCS and J1772 adapters for other EVs
  • 12V jump tools meant for EVs
  • A replacement 12V on some calls, not every call

The pros we connect you with are licensed and insured. That sentence is about the network. It isn’t a Charge Pro SF contractor license. No kilowatt figure belongs here unless the operator states it on your quote.

Tow when the car can’t take a charge

A plug doesn’t fix a smashed inlet. It doesn’t fix a pack that refuses current. It doesn’t fix a car that needs a bay. Mobile charging or a tow spells out that split.

California doesn’t cap ordinary private or consensual tow rates statewide. CVC 22658 is the private-property statute. It requires a posted sign at least 17 by 22 inches. Lettering must be at least one inch. The sign must name the tow firms and the enforcement number. The operator must notify law enforcement within one hour. Overcharging past the approved rate in that setting creates extra liability. The statute sets that at four times the amount charged. CHP sets rates only for its rotation vendors. On rotation, you don’t choose the truck. Ask what you’ll pay if you still have a choice. This page won’t invent a Hayward tow bill.

A mobile charge that works leaves the car on its own wheels.

Call the referral line when the car is done

If the EV is dead at the 880 and 92 tangle, call. Same if you’re on Mission Boulevard, downtown, or in the highlands. That’s an empty pack, a dead 12V, or a port that won’t open. We serve Hayward and the rest of the Bay Area. The operator who accepts the pin quotes first.

Call (415) 630-6268. That number is the match line. It isn’t a promise that a truck is already on your block.
